P.D. Platt is an independent author of a range of fictional works--stories that involve the myriad of obstacles and ill-fated challenges of life. It's all about the never-ending quest to create immersive, entertaining storytelling. His preferred platform is the novella, which he believes offers the purest form of fiction, pulling the reader into a temporary world and leaving them with an increased appreciation for life and the human spirit.

In Missing Pieces: The Unleashing of Wynter Mandrel by P.D. Platt, Wynter was fired in a very detached manner by EnerCore Systems after eight years of service. A strange note instructs her to attend an early morning meeting at a place not far from her former workplace, Emitten Dynamics. The agency admits that they are responsible for her termination, and they did it because of Wynter’s special abilities, or her metaphysical gifts, which are growing stronger every day. They offer her compensation, protection, and assistance to understand her abilities better. But Wynter is destined for greater things, and Emitten Dynamics is certainly not on the list.
The prologue gives an indication of how cerebral this story is. Before it engages us in suspenseful action, it consistently occupies us with metaphysical curiosity. The premise slightly reminds me of the 2011 film, The Adjustment Bureau, in terms of how the protagonist’s life is being watched and controlled by a mysterious agency, allegedly for the sake of her safety and the people around her. Characterization is solid. It’s not hard to relate to Wynter, although at times I feel that Kyle Strouse, Wynter’s boyfriend, deserved a bit more character development, particularly at the end. It was hard to figure out the direction of the plot, and I certainly didn’t expect that both Wynter and Kyle would receive a special visitor, the one with all the answers that the lead character seeks. Simply put, it was a fast, slightly peculiar sci-fi novella for me, but gratifying nonetheless.
