Most people would not think that a cat could be a castle guard. In Min: The Cat Who Guards the Castle by Lynn Helton, we meet one such cat. Min is a rather small cat who loves her family, the queen, king, prince, and princess. One day, the prince and princess discover some items missing from their rooms. They quickly alert their parents, who send out their helpers and Min to begin looking for the items. Min uses some deduction skills to think about who or what might have wanted these things. Her path leads her all over the garden as she works to find the culprit. Will Min solve the mystery?
Min: The Cat Who Guards the Castle is equal parts mystery and nature lesson. I enjoyed the way Min used her reasoning skills to try to pinpoint who might want the stolen items. As Min works to solve the puzzle, she meets a little raven, mice, and a bowerbird. Information on ravens and bowerbirds is included at the end of the story. The illustrations by K. Helton and Lynn Helton highlight little Min with her green eyes. Each spread is pictured from Min's point of view, so only the legs of the humans are shown, which is very clever! Kids will be intrigued by the way Min uses her skills of deduction and knowledge of wildlife to solve the problem. Min also approaches each suspect without being accusatory. This story will enchant mystery and cat fans alike.
