Midnight and Little Girl Blue by Tiffany Golden is a wondrous fantasy adventure story that will certainly engage and entertain younger readers. Little Nalla Blue is a child of the blue light, but as the story starts the reader quickly sympathises with this lone young girl with an unwell mother, who seems to be haunted by a creature that Nalla is fearful of. On top of this, little Nalla is left to clean the house from the flooding waters and the mud from the Ndoto River banks, which keeps her working night and day. The author shows an incredible imagination in this fun adventure story, with a fantastical saviour called Midnight coming to little Nalla Blue's rescue, and taking her on an amazing adventure.
There is a good, underlying message about the value of family relationships, which becomes clear as you progress through the book. The reader gets to understand why poor little Nalla is in such a mess, why her family has been torn apart, and that the only way to make things better and be rid of her nightmares and help her mother is to find her father and her brother. Midnight and Little Girl Blue by Tiffany Golden is a story that parents could read to younger children, or certainly is a good chapter book for middle school age children. A thoroughly entertaining read which brings a real fantasy to life with a satisfying and feel-good ending.
