Middle Third by Robert E. Kearns is a captivating coming-of-age story that follows Concepta Arkin, a young girl from the Dublin suburb of Middle Third. From a young age, Concepta feels a deep connection to her birthplace and the nature around her. However, when her parents enroll her in a Catholic school at four, she must leave behind her beloved Middle Third and adapt to a new way of life. Accompanied by her mother, Agnes, Concepta dreads the prospect of attending school and leaving Middle Third and takes solace in that she will return to Middle Third soon. However, doubt creeps in as to whether the nuns could hang on to her for as long as they choose. Will she find her way back to Middle Third?

Robert E. Kearns weaves together elements of fantasy and nature subtly and understatedly, creating a unique and enchanting atmosphere that sets this story apart. The dark twist introduced by the arrival of Sister Aloysius, Concepta's strict and ominous schoolteacher, adds a layer of tension and danger to the narrative, making for a gripping read. Kearns' prose is both lyrical and accessible, making the story easy to follow and enjoy. In addition, the themes of identity and belonging and the challenges of growing up are handled with sensitivity and nuance, making Middle Third a poignant and relatable read for all ages.
