Mickey Collins by Kevin Forde follows the life story of Mickey Collins as he remembers where his life went wrong. Born in Cork, Ireland, Mickey was part of a crime family and paid the price for it as he looked forward to his days behind bars. At the age of 30, Mickey had a rap sheet that would put any ordinary citizen to shame, and that was saying something. His mother, Tanya, was the leader of her criminal group and had groomed her children to become criminals as well. Shoplifting, and taking drugs was too easy for him and his siblings as they hopped from one foster home to another. However, things became tough when Mickey became an adult and faced jail time. When Tanya threw him under the bus for certain crimes, Mickey realized he had no one to blame but himself for his life.
I adored Mickey Collins by Kevin Forde. From the moment the story began until the last sentence, it was a treat that I thoroughly enjoyed. Mickey’s narrative was terrific, to say the least. At first, I thought he was an unreliable narrator; however, as the story progressed his erratic thoughts became very obvious. You could track Mickey’s progress and development through the way he shared his story with readers. It became progressively mature and almost deranged as he grew up and lost every semblance of innocence. Tanya had a very important role to play in her son’s downfall. No one was perfect, and our antihero was no exception to that. I wasn’t expecting to find humor in the story. I was ready for a dark, gritty tale of how a life of crime can destroy everything in its way. What I received was a narrative jammed-packed with action; the sometimes dark and mostly engrossing story of a man lost to crime.
