Set on a distant place called Miasma, human colonists made the marshy and rainy planet their home. We follow the story through the first person point-of-view of three characters; Lanton Mowhay, Tanaka Emi and Mokan. Lanton is a packet-runner. He’s seemingly nonchalant but has quite an attentive nature, which makes him an easily likable character. Same goes to Emi, the polite transcriber/librarian, whose great-grandparents met an unfortunate fate while trying to expand their communication with the intriguing Jaggra, a species considered to be native to the planet. Then there’s Mokan, the self-centered mad scientist.

Miasma by Pete Alex Harris is a sci-fi mystery where people still haven't enough knowledge about the mysterious Jaggra, even though they have managed to co-exist together and prevent further altercations between each other since a tragic massacre. When a Jaggra named Edru somehow communicates with Lanton, it’s apparent that it’s something that should be investigated, especially when the scientists continuously examine the planet that they inhabit.

Some parts of the story are slow, which may not suit some readers. That said, these are sufficiently compensated by the intricate world building, and the unhurried pace offers more hints of the mysterious Jaggra, the planet and the human colonists themselves. The three-part, first person POV of the protagonists have enough depth for readers to relate to and invest in them. I gravitated towards Emi more, and found her introverted, socially awkward and inquisitive persona appealing. On the whole, Miasma has a premise and plot that will intrigue readers’ curious mind.
