Miami’s Yester’Years: Its Forgotten Founder Locke Tiffin Highleyman by Patricia Daly-Lipe is an astonishing account of the history of Miami and Southern Florida, beginning in 1513. “This is the story of the conversion of that “swamp” of “grass and mire” to a fancy metropolis.” The story includes the wars of the Seminole Indians and of Henry M. Flagler, who brought the railway to Southern Florida. Patricia highlights the three-week trip her grandfather took from Jacksonville to Miami, including traveling through jungles and swamps. In 1911, Locke’s family was moved there to create Biscayne Bay, Palm Island, and Hibiscus Island by dredging the islands. By 1920, Locke had transformed the wilderness into a paradise and sold tropical island lots to those who could afford them.
Miami’s Yester’Years: Its Forgotten Founder Locke Tiffin Highleyman is by far the most enjoyable history book I have read. Patricia Daly-Lipe has included all her research references, beautiful photos, maps, and poems. I especially enjoyed the interesting tales passed down through generations, such as The Barefoot Mailman and the strength, courage, and determination of the Highleyman family. The book is well written and smooth flowing from beginning to end, a pleasure to read and learn from. Miami’s Yester’Years is suitable for all ages and should be included in history lessons for children and adults. “To understand the present, we must appreciate and comprehend what came before.” Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable book.
