Kids love mermaids! Mermaids, Mermaids in the Sea by Bethany Stahl is filled with all kinds of mermaids. Each spread starts with the refrain Mermaids, Mermaids in the Sea, and then adds a rhyming couplet. Other sea creatures make appearances throughout the book, such as manatees, crabs, and squid. The underwater world that Stahl has illustrated is very inviting and each mermaid is unique. There is a link to an animated version of the book as well as a mini drawing lesson at the end. What a joyful celebration of all things mermaid.
Mermaids, Mermaids in the Sea will be in high demand. As a former children’s librarian, I was asked almost daily for books on mermaids. Many of the choices available were much longer stories so how refreshing to find one that parents will be able to read as a bedtime story. The rhyming flow of the story will make it a great read-aloud. Bethany Stahl has created a book that mermaid fans will request again and again. She has created a diverse cast of mermaids that kids will enjoy getting to know. I especially enjoyed the Mermaid’s friend Sweetie Pie, the squid. This book will also work as an early reader with the repeating refrain at the beginning of each page and the rhyming text with lots of space around it. Mermaids, Mermaids in the Sea is sure to please all mermaid and ocean fans. You and your kids may want to strap on your own mermaid tail and splash in the water after reading this book.
