Megan's Challenge: Megan’s World, Book 5 is an animal adventure book for children and preteens written by Pamela Foland. Dr. Newton had been really impressed by Megan’s interest in veterinary medicine and her ability to work with the animals who were being treated in the Furry Friends Clinic. Knowing that she was seriously considering studying to become a veterinarian, he’d invited her to observe him and Dr. Rogers while they were operating during their spay and neuter clinic. At first, the medicinal smells and the initial incisions were intimidating and made Megan feel a bit dizzy, but, as she saw how quickly the surgeries were performed and how soon the dogs and cats were up again and in recovery, she began to relax and feel a lot better about the process. Megan had a personal interest in the procedure as her four kittens were getting spayed or neutered that week. She knew it was the right thing to do and that the doctors and vet techs at Furry Friends would take the best care of her babies, but still her fears and concerns lingered.
Megan's Challenge does an excellent job at showing readers how a spay/neuter clinic actually works. This coming of age series just keeps on getting better and better as Megan continues to expand her knowledge of dog emergency care as a part of her pet sitting enterprise and gets more involved at the Furry Friends Clinic. I enjoyed seeing her master her fears about getting her kittens spayed and neutered and was impressed by how professional her pet sitting skills had become. Foland also continues to address the parallel situation of Megan’s brother, whose new family situation seemed to have put his college future on hold in the earlier book. Seeing him dote on his new son, help his sister through a nerve-wracking day, and sign up for college courses was inspirational. Foland’s plot is compelling, and her characters have begun to feel like old and treasured friends. Megan's Challenge: Megan’s World, Book 5 is most highly recommended.
