Meet the Jeep by David Zatz is an outstanding book kids will love. The author takes children from the beginning when the Army needed a vehicle they could use that would not get stuck in the mud. They felt a vehicle with an engine that could turn all four wheels would be best for their needs. Three different companies attempted to complete the task the Army requested. Taking the best they offered and putting it into one vehicle gave the Army what they needed, but now they needed to build thousands to ship overseas. Throughout the years the Jeep has changed its style, audience, and builders. Its sturdy body and unique qualities have made this a vehicle that has lasted through the decades.
While reading Meet the Jeep, I wished several times my own children were still young enough to enjoy this book. David Zatz presents his story in words children can understand, yet challenge and educate them. Meet the Jeep is a level 3 reader in the Waldorf Publishers books. Perfect for independent readers who already have a good grasp of phonics and are ready to experiment with larger words and content that is new to them. The author makes learning about Jeeps interesting and fun. I discovered many things I didn’t know about this type of vehicle. The pictures are colorful on one page, while the font is large and easy to read on the opposite page. This book keeps with the impressive collection of readers from the Waldorf series for children.
