Math Can Be Fun: A Parent's Guide to Engaging Kids in Math by Michele Williams is a non-fiction educational book for parents and children having issues with learning math. The chapters in this book cover different topics and creative ideas for parents to engage their children and make math fun. Ideas include having children help with cooking and baking, using personalized drawings and tailor made word problems to excite the child about math, and encouraging children with kudos and thumbs up to teach them that they can succeed at math. The book is well researched and is a nice mix of personal success stories from a successful tutoring career, with graphs and quotes from reputable researchers and psychologists from around the world.
I really enjoyed Math Can Be Fun: A Parent's Guide to Engaging Kids in Math. When my son was younger, my husband and I struggled to get him interested in math. We spent many hours attempting some of the activities within this book. One of our success stories came through the game Monopoly, which involves adding two dice, counting spaces around a board, multiplying by four and ten (water works and electric company) and making change through Monopoly money. My son is fourteen and I still make him be the banker so that he is constantly practicing those basic math skills that he needs to build on with algebra and geometry coming up in high school. A strong mathematical basis is important for any child, and Michele Williams understands this and delivers in her book.
