Last year I decided my family needed a Great Pyrenees dog. If you are not familiar with the breed think of polar bear. The breed is large with beautiful white hair, black eyes, black nose, and black lips. They are working dogs and usually raised with sheep or goats. The breed is happy, energetic and loves to roam. I didn’t think this was a problem since we live on a farm. Our new puppy, Emmie, has 70 acres to call her own. I soon discovered this breed is very independent and will attempt to be the pack leader if allowed. I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to review Cesar-Millan’s "Mastering Leadership Series". This is a series of 6 DVDs in a boxed set. You may be familiar with the name Cesar-Millan. He is also known as the dog whisperer and has his own show on Animal Planet.
The DVDs are well done technically. The sound and picture are clear and bright. Each DVD covers a different aspect of owning a dog. I began with the one titled 'Your New Dog: First Day and Beyond'. Cesar takes the viewer through three situations in choosing a dog including shelters, rescue groups and a breeder. He demonstrates the need to consider energy and assists the new owner in introducing the dog to their new home. The second one I chose was 'Raising the Perfect Puppy'. Once again he demonstrates how to choose a puppy that will fit your needs. He demonstrates how to teach the puppy boundaries in his new home. Other DVDs cover 'Common Canine Misbehaviors', 'Becoming the Pack Leader', and 'People Training for Dogs'.
I was surprised at the method Cesar used to wake the dog up. I also noticed the importance of silence and quiet. Learning to be a pack leader is one of the most important segments in this series. I enjoyed listening to this series and I learned a lot. Hopefully I learned enough to calm Emmie down and teach her that I am the pack leader. I highly recommend this series for all dog owners.
