I suppose just about everyone knows the popular children’s song, “Mary had a little lamb.” When learning a new musical instrument, it was one of the most used beginner tunes. But does anyone know the story behind the song? Mary Sawyer was a pioneer girl. Her father raised sheep. When one of the newborn lambs looked close to death, she couldn’t bear to see it suffer. So, she brought it inside to care for it. The lamb lived and, mothered with Mary’s love, thought Mary was its mother. It followed her everywhere, even to school.
Wanda Kay Knight’s picture book story, Mary Sawyer: The Lamb’s Song, The Courageous Kids Series, tells the story behind the popular children’s song. It’s a charming story about a little girl who loved animals, especially one little lamb who almost died. The story is written in simple language so a young reader can learn to read along with a parent or guardian. The illustrations are beautiful: bright and colorful. Young readers will love learning about the ways Mary cared for this precious lamb, nursing it back to life. Young readers will feel the love Mary had for it and for all animals. Her love for animals was a gift she shared with the world for many years. This is a lovely, heartwarming story that will be a treasure in any child’s bookshelf. Not only is it a compassionate story, but it will teach young readers that anything is possible if you have the courage to try.
