Marv Taking Charge: A Story of Bold Love and Courage by Lois Hoitenga Roelofs takes us through the life of Marv after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Lois and Marv had been married for fifty-five years, and although they were very different, they had a great marriage. For instance, Marv used to do grocery shopping and cooking, to the surprise of many of their visitors. Marv was a social worker, while Lois, a lifelong scholar, had a Ph.D. in nursing. Marv had always been restless and had a habit of smoking that put him at risk of lung cancer. He had earlier fought prostate cancer, which left him with challenges that he accepted. This time, when he was told his prognosis was terminal, he resolved to live his last days on his terms. To find out how Lois copes with the subsequent events, get a copy of this book.
I was glad to have read Marv Taking Charge by Lois Hoitenga Roelofs at a time when the world is experiencing a rise in the prevalence of lifestyle diseases. Reading the book led me to experience a wide range of emotions. Having a medical background myself, I was drawn to a concept expressed in the book that highlights the need to cater to the priorities of the patient and not just conform to the familiar treat-and-cure philosophy. I loved how Lois captured her emotions and those of her loved ones so vividly. She provided detail which gives the reader an in-depth understanding of events. I also appreciated the easy-to-understand language used in this memoir, making it accessible to all readers. I cannot wait to check Lois's blog and recommend that the readers of this book do the same.
