Mark of the Dragon by JW Troemner is the first book in the Urban Dragon series. Ordinary for Rosario is the uncertainty of where she’ll sleep, where her next meal will come from, or if her manic dragon best friend will end up getting herself killed. Arkay has taken it upon herself to be Rosario’s protector and loyal friend, but her latest attempt at defending her ends up causing more harm than good. Between a bizarre cooler of human organs and the police’s sudden interest in them, Rosario and Arkay don’t know if they’ll be able to make it out of this one.
Mark of the Dragon is a unique take on dragons. It’s urban with an honest look at homeless life, never knowing where to sleep or how to eat. Arkay has a dragon’s temperament, but she’s loyal and fiercely protective, with enough humor and sincerity to make her lovable. Rosario is sincere and sympathetic, but she’s also strong and loyal. Danielle breaks stereotypes as a ghoul. Ghouls are often dark and evil creatures that feed on the dead. Danielle does feed on the dead, but she’s definitely not evil.
JW Troemner brings these characters to life with vivid descriptions, humor, and a lot of heart. Rosario and Arkay are very different personalities, but they balance each other, and act as a grounding force for the other. Mark of the Dragon is sincere, funny, a little dark, and clever, the kind of story that left me wanting more. Perfect for anyone who loves dragons, humor, and fantasy. A must-read!
