In Margie Surprises Doc by Virginia K. White, as Olivia the Opossum makes her way across the creek bank, she hopes to find something delicious to eat. Although she cannot see or hear, her sense of smell is extraordinary. Her only hope is to find a delicious snack left behind by the humans. As night falls, Olivia stumbles across a safe place to sleep, away from all the dangers of nature. Little does she realize that her hiding place is in Doc's yard. The local veterinarian loves animals and has welcomed many creatures into his home, including a German Shepherd, a Siamese cat, and a family of skunks. Will Olivia be welcomed into their family and help them organize the best birthday party for the incredible Doc?
Margie Surprises Doc by Virginia K. White is a beautiful, heartwarming story filled with wonderful life lessons and interesting facts about animal development and nature. Each one of the characters was created with so much attention to detail and thoughtfulness. My favorite characters were the four kits, Smelldan, Stinker Bell, Odora, and Reeker. The games they played were very entertaining, especially the hilarious skunk spraying contest. I believe any young reader will learn a great deal about nature from this book and why it is important to care for the environment. But they will also learn to appreciate those who are different from themselves and to recognize their own unique talents and have the confidence to be themselves. A superb book with a fantastic message.
