“Finishing is far more important than starting” are the famous words of African-American Civil Rights Movement figure, James Meredith. In this book, March On Children! The Story Of James Meredith’s March Against Fear by Katina L Rankin, children will learn about how James Meredith had a passion to end inequality and obtain his rights as a citizen under the United States Constitution. His lone journey to walk from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi in an effort to encourage these rights was the passion behind the March Against Fear. James was admitted to Ole Miss University on a court order but initially was not allowed to attend due to the university's segregation; he was later allowed but had to be escorted to and from the university by the U.S. Marshals on a daily basis. As a part of this struggle, James was shot and while he was in the hospital, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and others continued his journey.
Through the history outlined in this well-written book, your child will not only learn about James's legacy but can begin their own March Against Fear. Whenever I encounter any hero of positive change I'm always elated and this book did not disappoint. It is important for children to read and to learn about all the heroes that have come before them. The struggles and the impact of these heroes must be heard and shared in order for future generations to appreciate all of the rights that they currently have and enjoy. This book also provides your child with the courage they need during their own journey.
