Mama, Why Do Babies Cry? is a children’s book written by Amy Winfield and illustrated by Katlego Kgabale. A young girl asks her mother why babies cry. Her mother replies that babies cry for many reasons, such as when they are hungry, their diapers need to be changed, they have made a mess with their food, are being bathed, their teeth are growing through their gums, or they have hurt themselves. They also cry if it is too hot, if they feel sick, they are lonely, afraid, angry or tired. When the young girl asks if she had cried as a baby, her mother honestly answers that she did, but that her mother would always make it better by lifting her up and hugging the tears away.

Beautifully told and illustrated, Mama, Why Do Babies Cry? is an invaluable resource for parents confronted by such a complex question. At the back of the book, the reader will find different methods which will help soothe a crying baby and lull them to sleep or back to happiness. Amy Winfield’s book is direct and to the point. It is written in such a simple style that it would be an ideal addition to the library of a daycare center or at home, to be read at bed time. I enjoyed this educational read and recommend it to all, as there are few places where you will not encounter babies when you are outside your home (or even inside).
