Malnourished: Equipping Parents to Battle Spiritual Poverty on the Home Front by Jaime Hampton is written as a journey of faith. Ms Hampton does not claim to know all the answers, but every point she makes is referenced back to the Bible. Her theme is a comparison between the instinctive desire for water and food to survive, and the spiritual need to become a disciple of Christ to attain true happiness and peace in His service. Divided into eleven chapters, Malnourished tackles the upbringing of children from toddlers to adulthood, where the accent is on disciplining, not to be confused with harsh disciplining: this book is rooted in love. There are references to helpful resources, books and websites throughout, and listed in an appendix.
Jaime Hampton comes over as a friend in Malnourished: Equipping Parents to Battle Spiritual Poverty on the Home Front. She approaches a subject of concern to us all with humility, faith, and an endearing sense of humour. Alluding to our responsibility to bring up children in the knowledge and worship of Jesus - Matthew 18:1-7 – she comments “Wow. Definitely not Hallmark card material.” Ms Hampton assures readers more than once that it is never too late to begin, and the final chapter, “40 Days,” shows a practical way to start. Where she herself lacks understanding, as in “The Mark of the Beast,” she uses it to demonstrate research; without knowledge, none of us is equipped to discipline others. I found Malnourished valuable and readable: a book I shall turn to many times in the future.
