Makings: Explorations in the Poetry of Thought by Steven Henry Miller is true to its title in exploring the crossing paths of poetry and philosophy. The book is divided into five sections. The first part presents aphorisms and literary fragments, from simple thoughts such as 'I quit the law' to something profound like 'few are out of their minds, but many are out of their bodies.' The second part is symbols of reality inscribed on a map of the world that contains a map insert. The third part pays homage to the creative self in a theme-and-variations form where it tackles the idea of what can make a man become a Superior Man. The fourth and fifth parts present a picture poem and a metrical poem that provide the anthology's conclusion.
Makings: Explorations in the Poetry of Thought embraces literature; where there has been a long quarrel between poetry and philosophy.
