Magicide by Carolyn V. Hamilton is a mystery, a thriller, a truly magical experience. Maxwell Beacham-Jones is the famous magician who is about to perform a trick that is more dangerous than any he has done before. He will be handcuffed and shackled high in the air onto a roller coaster track and will need to escape before the speeding cars approach. This trick goes terribly bad and in front of a live Las Vegas audience and millions of people in front of their TVs, Maxwell is unable to remove the chains in time. The questions begin and it is quickly learned that this was not a trick gone bad, but murder. Detective Cheri Raymer and her partner Pizzarelli are now faced with the assignment of finding out who did it and why Maxwell was killed. The reader then follows along and is immersed in the revealing world of magic, the life of the famous Las Vegas showgirls and performers, and the twists and turns of this case. We meet the ex-wife, son, friends and lovers, and other magicians who had reason to both hate and love Maxwell.
Carolyn V. Hamilton has written Magicide with the perfect amount of intrigue. I became hooked from the very beginning and while several times I thought I had the case solved there was always a bump that proved me wrong. The ending left me with my mouth open in surprise. Magicide must be read by all want-to-be, wonder-how, wish I could be a magician readers, as well as by those who love a really good mystery, thriller, suspense story. Hamilton has written a sure winner and Magicide is a must-read.
