Author Dawn Doig, M.Sc., M.Ed, is the author of 15 children’s picture books on a variety of topics including childhood hearing loss, bullying and forgiveness, dysgraphia, learning English as an additional language, and positive self-image. Some of her books are just plain silly and prone to giggles. She has been blessed with two extremely rewarding careers working with children as an audiologist and as an English as an additional language teacher in different parts of the world including way up north in the Canadian arctic, Kuwait, England, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, and Cameroon. Dawn has two grown children who live in Canada. She currently resides in Cameroon with her hubby Bruce and two very rambunctious but adorable female kitties. She gets her inspiration for her children’s books from her family, the children she has the pleasure of working with, general life experiences, and her feline friends. Dawn is a passionate baker who loves to share her homemade goodies with others. She is always ready to head out on the next thrilling adventure with Bruce and they never know where the wind will blow them to next. All proceeds from Dawn’s books are currently being donated to help raise the funds to build a new school for the deaf/orphanage in Cameroon, Africa.

I’ve always loved to bake. I even had a special cookbook that was meant for young bakers. Lulubelle loves baking, too. Like me, she has a special love affair with anything chocolate. Though, she does enjoy baking non-chocolate specialties like apple pandowdy, graham raisin cookies, and spicy ginger snaps. I have a box of recipes, alphabetically-organized so I can find my favorite recipes quickly and easily. Lulubelle has the same idea. Each of her special treats is alphabetically organized.
Dawn Doig’s children’s picture book and cookbook, Lulubelle Loves to Bake, is a great way to introduce young readers to baking and organizing important things like recipes alphabetically. With rhyming verse, the author introduces each new treat, saying something special about it. For example, her introduction to the graham raisin cookies reads: “Lulubelle loves goodies made of graham; such a glamorous glorious taste./ Cookies graced with graham and raisins are cookies you won’t want to waste.” Notice how the introduction to this recipe, which falls under the letter ‘G’ for graham raisin cookies, uses a lot of words which begin with the letter ‘G’. It’s a very clever technique to expand a young reader’s ability to recognize words that begin with each letter of the alphabet.
Each recipe is well presented with a list of ingredients in order of use and detailed instructions. The colorful illustrations, which include a cute creature called Lulubelle, will certainly charm young readers into wanting to try making each of these delicious-looking treats. What a great learning tool for baking, reading, recognizing the importance of each letter of the alphabet, and organizational skills (listing one’s special recipes alphabetically).
