Love, Nina: A Nanny Writes Home is written and read by Nina Stibbe. In the early 1980s, Nina Stibbe applied for a job as a nanny; she was a mere 20 years old. She missed the long chats with her sister so she wrote letters to her, telling her about the family she worked for, the people who visited and about the London neighborhood she now called home. She is taking care of two boys, nine-year-old Will and 10-year-old Sam. Their mother is Mary-Kay Wilmers, the editor of London Review of Books. The neighborhood is upscale and the neighbors are among the literary elite. Nina enjoys the company of the neighbors.
Recently the letters were found and put into the form of a book. The book is in two parts: Part One shares her life as a nanny to Will and Sam. She shares bits of information about Mary-Kay’s friends that stop in to visit. Part Two is written during Nina’s time at the university. She continues to live with Mary-Kay and helps out with the boys, but in a less formal manner. Love, Nina is a delightful read. This is a review of the audio format. I enjoyed hearing the author read her own letters. The letters are interesting and show author Nina Stibbe’s talent. She managed to take tidbits of information and make them fascinating and humorous. I often judge a book by whether it makes me smile and Love, Nina most certainly did.
