Lost Bits is a dystopian sci-fi novel by Kerry Nietz. Automated human robot K-404 wakes up to find himself in a desolate wasteland covered in unwanted and damaged machines. Having sporadic memories of his ten-year-old human child, Ele, and her family, 404 makes it his mission to find her at all costs. As he tries to make his way across the Wall of the Yard, he is joined by two other companions, Sam and Wes. But the Yard is a dangerous place to traverse as machine-devouring monsters and scavengers lurk in every nook and cranny. After almost dying trying to make it across the Wall, 404 and his friends are unexpectedly rescued by a group of advanced sentient robots who offer them sanctuary. However, things may not be as they first appear, and 404's search for Ele leads him to unimaginable danger.
Kerry Nietz's survival tale about a robot's journey to find his human pleasantly surprises you with its warmth and heart. Despite being set in a futuristic dystopian world, Lost Bits is a story about hope that showcases what it means to be human. The main protagonist is a service robot, but he displays a surprising sense of compassion and loyalty to the humans who perhaps don't even deserve it. Nietz delves into some poignant themes that add to the depth of the narrative, making the story richer and more riveting to read. I particularly enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie between 404, Sam, and Wes. A brilliant sci-fi survival tale that I highly recommend.
