Lost at Sea! is an adventurous and endearing children's picture book by Ian Humpheryes. It follows the adventures of Clear Shrimp, who stays in a rockpool but is washed away into the ocean in some seaweed, where it was resting. When Clear Shrimp finds itself in the big ocean, it meets various other marine animals. An eel warns Clear Shrimp that it is very far from home and must be careful that other big fish don't mistake it for their dinner. Sure enough, a big flock of birds dives under the water, hunting, and later, big tuna fish are hunting for food as well. Clear Shrimp is terrified but spends the night in the deep ocean, where the strangest marine life comes to the fore. The next morning, an enormous whale sends for help, and Clear Shrimp is hopeful of returning to the rockpool.
The illustrations of Lost at Sea! are vivid and dreamy yet at the same time lifelike, which adds to the sense of adventure that Ian Humpheryes creates. It is a story with many ups and downs, written succinctly, and has a happy and exciting ending. There are little rhymes included that sum up the situations Clear Shrimp finds itself in, along with the main text of the story. Nothing short of an exceedingly captivating story for young readers, it is not only tons of fun but very educational as well, teaching children more about various marine life species and also the importance of friends and calling on kind and generous folks in times of need.
