Lost at Sea is a sleuth mystery novel by Linda Bello-Ruiz based on a true story. Rebecca was excited to be returning to her winter home of La Perlita, but overshadowing her joy was sadness at the disappearance of Alejandro Garcia, a beloved family friend. The Garcias and their friends were frustrated and angry over what seemed to be a cursory and delayed search and rescue effort after the panga fishing boat, which Alejandro was manning on his own, disappeared without a trace. Alejandro had disappeared in June. It was now November. Rebecca had done everything she could while home in California to assist through social media in keeping the search efforts alive. Now that she was here, she could take on a more in-depth role in finding out what happened on that day. It was to be a change from Rebecca’s usual stay in La Perlita, where she would relax and enjoy her winter retreat. This time she was investigating a dear friend’s disappearance, and no amount of threats, veiled or not, would discourage her from her search.
Linda Bello-Ruiz’s Lost at Sea follows Rebecca as she retraces the investigation of five months before and tries to figure out what happened to Alejandro and why. I loved getting to know the small and lovely town of La Perlita and trying to figure out, along with Rebecca, whether Alejandro actually survived his ordeal at sea. Bello-Ruiz gives the armchair sleuth plenty of red herrings and possibilities to consider as they try to solve the puzzle along with the protagonist. Her plot is well-constructed and solid, and her characters have authenticity and dimension. Lost at Sea is most highly recommended.
