“Wow! What a great idea!” was my first reaction after reading Owl’s suggestions to stop a bully—but H.I.T. doesn’t mean to swing at him. Little Chick Gets Bullied is a wonderful book offering sound advice on how to deal with a bully. Written by teacher-turned-author Nat Williams, this children’s picture book contains enjoyable illustrations and several examples of how a bully can interrupt and even destroy your fun activities. First, children need to know what bullying is, and second, how to deal with it. Who better to offer advice but a teacher and former camp leader? But, it’s written as an interesting tale rather than as non-fiction. The practical advice is offered in a subtle, but amusing way that children will enjoy. School and public libraries will benefit from the humorous—but serious—story of dealing with bullies.
When Little Chick is bullied several times, he asks others how to deal with a bully that’s ruining his fun. Kangaroo offers to teach him how to box, but Owl offers an acronym: H.I.T. so Little Chick can H.I.T. the bully. Children, parents, and teachers will like what H.I.T. stands for. I highly recommend Little Chick Gets Bullied because of its humorous, full-page artwork, an interesting story showing examples of bullying, and offering several solutions to school children. Author/teacher Nat Williams provides constructive lessons on how to deal with bullying in an easy-to-read story. And if H.I.T. doesn’t work, tell someone who can help. Little Chick Gets Bullied should be read to every child.
