Lil' Lukie, created by Christopher Brennan and Ger Hankey, is a children's picture book delivered in the style of a comic book, which is fitting given the story line. Following the birth of their new son, the parents bring the baby home for the first time. It doesn't take very long before they notice that their son, whom they've named Lukie Loo, is....different. In fact, Lukie has superpowers and they create more than just a few problems as his parents attempt to raise him as a normal child. This becomes more difficult as Lukie begins to grow and, eventually, people with less than noble intentions begin to take an interest.
Lil' Lukie is an extremely fun read which, according to the back matter, is the first in a series. This is great to hear since the story is wildly amusing to both the children who are the target audience, and the parents who will be along for the ride. I was particularly impressed by Ger Hankey's illustrations and their comic book characteristics, with hidden nods teased throughout to others in the superhero universe across different platforms. Christopher Brennan's narrative is rhythmic and creative, enhanced by colorful and unique imagery. Combined, both elements complement each other as they come together in one cohesive, brilliantly absorbing design. I'd recommend Lil' Lukie to parents of children who enjoy an engaging story line accompanied by illustrations that truly pop, whether it's as their own Lil' is being tucked into bed, or afterward when they have the book to themselves.
