In Life Without Living by SC Alban, Kate Martins cannot sleep because of horrible nightmares. Her husband, Alex, is ready to make her every wish come true. So, what's bugging her? Why does an unexpected encounter with a handsome young stranger named Gio unsettle her? Giovanni Rossi, or Gio, arrives in California, hoping to find the incarnation of his only love, Katarina. His old adversary, Alessandro, threatens to kill her because Katarina preferred Gio over him four centuries ago. Gio cannot die, but the woman he loves is in grave danger. This riveting first book in the Strega Series will appeal to fans of fantasy, drama, romance, and paranormal fiction.
Life Without Living invites us to dive into the whirlwind of human passions leading to tragedies, murders, and betrayals. SC Alban crafts a world where immortality is a curse, powerful witches hide among ordinary people, and love is ageless. There is a thought-provoking philosophy behind the lyrical, non-linear narration that deepens the mystery around the main characters. Kate has a gentle soul, but it's wounded. The transformation of this timid woman into a vibrant personality who finds the strength to stand up for herself is admirable and uplifting. Gio looks young, and his real age strikingly contrasts with his appearance, adding more layers to this appealing character. Alban describes a beguiling villain whose charm is deadly poison for his victim. The dynamics between the characters and the conflict between love and duty give momentum to the narrative. The climactic ending promises a thrilling sequel that I cannot wait to read.
