In Life on a Mountain, the second book in Love is a Cabin Series by Jacque Jacobs, Bella Anderson, a retired professor, hopes to finally work on her novel in her tranquil cabin. It is the third week since she arrived. She still remembers experiences from her childhood and past years spent in the mountains. But drug activities along the Smoky Mountains, where her cabin is located, have been a distraction, and Bella is still shaken by the latest events on her property. Local authorities also unearth additional criminal activity in the region. As investigations continue, Bella tries to get on with her daily work. Two men have also expressed interest in her and Bella wonders whether it is time to move on since her husband’s death.
With breathtaking descriptions of the beautiful, sweeping landscape where the cabin is nestled, Life on a Mountain creates the perfect backdrop for the story. The peaceful surrounding is effectively contrasted to the dangerous criminal activities that take place in it. The story also explores the mountain folks' delightful culture and their practical wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation. I liked that the book incorporates both romance and mystery elements. There are also surprising and captivating events in the novel. At the start of each chapter, the author includes the naturalist John Muir’s enlightening quotes about the healing power and beauty of nature. Life on a Mountain by Jacque Jacobs is a charming and absorbing mystery novel set in the picturesque environment of the Smoky Mountains. Loved the story and its setting.
