Life After: Finding Strength and Spirit in Unexpected Change, by Anna Mitchell Hall, is the ideal book for anyone grappling with sudden change. Change happens to everyone. It's the only thing you can really predict in life. People and events happen that can change your life in ways you never dream of. Some change is good; some change is bad. But any kind of change can affect you to one degree or another. Hall shows you how to handle change with courage instead of fear; how to accept change with grace--even the
negative kind, or the kind that challenges your faith.
This author grounds her book in research and brain science and is more than just advice on how to white-knuckle your way through change. Change can be transformative, and Hall shows you how, with practical approaches and spiritual guidance. Hall outlines in each chapter the value of challenges, loss, heartache, and the ebb and flow of change. Her approach includes mindfulness, reflection, discernment, acceptance, the Sabbath, and more. I like how she brings a personal feel to her ideas, connecting with the reader on an emotional level, as she describes how everyone faces change during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was moved and impressed by her clarity. This book is a valuable resource for anyone struggling with change, or for helping professionals with clients or patients who may benefit from new insights and coping strategies.
This book is also helpful to Christians whose faith may falter in the face of change as it uses Bible passages to illustrate certain points. My favorite takeaway point was Cultivating Change Readiness. A 31-day journal is also included, with insightful, evocative prompts that you can use to write about your own changes. If you can prepare yourself for change to occur in your life, the battle of dealing with change is half-won. If you're looking for extra support and understanding during a tough time of change, Life After: Finding Strength and Spirit in Unexpected Change by Anna Mitchell Hall is a must-read.
