Letters to Loretta From The Radio Shack by Laura Lynn Ashworth is a collection of letters between two childhood friends, Loretta and Sal, during WWII. Through their correspondence, Loretta and Sal slowly blossom into sweethearts as Loretta writes from their hometown of Chicago, Illinois, while Sal writes from the many places the US Navy sends him. Loretta keeps Sal updated on the local hot spots of Chicago nightlife, their old friends and neighbors, and popular songs and films of the day. Sal light-heartedly relates his training and what details the censors allow of his missions as he traverses the dangerous waters of the Pacific to the Mariana Islands and then Okinawa, playing his part in some of the most memorable battles of WWII. Filled with witty nuances, Chicago heritage, and ample banter over the Big Band-era stars of the day, this book is an endearing journey that music and history lovers shouldn’t miss.
Letters To Loretta From the Radio Shack is a delightful time capsule of star-crossed love during the war of all wars. Laura Lynn Ashworth has arranged a superbly poignant collection of letters that give insight into a world modern film and literature have yet to capture. With a Polish “Busia” who grew up in Chicago and a brother who was in the Mariana Islands during WWII, this book took me to the time and places I have only imagined through their stories. Letters To Loretta From The Radio Shack speaks its own refreshingly honest language that you won’t find anywhere else – Laura Lynn Ashworth hasn’t tainted the dialogue of the letters and allows you to grow with the characters from beginning to end. Letters To Loretta From The Radio Shack captures the struggles and uncertainty that the inner turmoil of separation and war can cause. I’m overjoyed Laura Lynn Ashworth has arranged these correspondences – they preserve a way of life and language that lived in Midwest USA during the 1940s.
