Letters From Around The World, by Demetra Tsavaris-Lecourezos, is an interactive picture book that centers around the Greek alphabet. Children of all ages, as well as anyone interested in learning a new language, will find themselves entertained by sounding out the common words that are associated with the corresponding letters. Pictures are also depicted along with foreign words in order to correlate with them. In doing so, the pictures bring about splashes of color to create a bright book on many levels.
Demetra Tsavaris-Lecourezos’ Letters From Around the World was beyond refreshing. Even being 38 years old, I really got a lot of enjoyment out of sounding the words out and felt a sense of accomplishment after reading this book. One of the facets of Letters From Around the World that I loved was that it had blank pages for children to create their own ideas. This would be a true gem to have in all classrooms, from young to old. Nursery school to nursing homes, I feel that no matter our age we become more alive when we feel we have learned something new and can apply it, even in the smallest way. The simplicity of Letters From Around The World has a brilliant way of sticking in the brain, letting us retain the information longer, being as brief and to the point as it is. It’s important for all children to learn as much about the world as they can so that they realize just how vast the world around them really is.
