Thoughtful and spiritually intoxicating, Let’s Go Dancing in the Light: A Collection of Poetry and Prose for Soul and Spirit by Gloria D. Gonsalves is a compendium of both poems and essays designed to intoxicate the soul with lofty and pious thoughts — I would use the word “radical” thoughts with reservation. A collection that invites the reader to reconsider the realities that are most intimate to the human soul: love and faith, pain and regret, forgiveness, self-acceptance, and a lot more.
This collection is a powerful reflection of the moments of the spirit and the divine impulse that lifts the soul and spirit of humans to aspire to the values that create meaning and enhance their sense of self. Readers will find short, rhythmic, and well-crafted poems that explore the climates of the soul. I had so many things to ponder about while reading the words in this collection.
For instance, in “In Search of Liberty,” Gloria D. Gonsalves captures the sentiments and reality of many a desolate soul seeking appreciation and acceptance, a poem that powerfully demonstrates the weakness experienced by almost everyone at some point, wanting to belong:
“Meeting and speaking
in the tones of presence.
Nodding and agreeing
to the ideas made for me.”
Then there is the subtle, yet poignant indictment of religious violence, fanaticism, and terrorism orchestrated in the name of God:
"Tell me which God
amputates children as victory,
kills to amplify the holy word."
This collection is awesome, loosely written, but very realistic. I enjoyed the realism and how the author looks at very common feelings, the unsayable sentiments that often stare us in the face, and how she so beautifully helps the reader to think about their soul’s language, spirituality, expression of being, and a lot more. The writing is poetic, lyrical, and loaded with reflections that will help readers look at life in a more focused and positive way. Let’s Go Dancing in the Light: A Collection of Poetry and Prose for Soul and Spirit is a gift of music, of thought, and of love. It is spiritual, poetic, and at times very philosophical.
