Leaving War, Finding Love: A Veteran's Transition by Hillary Sigrist is a slim and inspiring story that offers readers a wonderful look at what it feels like to transition from military service to civilian life, and what coming home from war signifies to both the warrior and the wife. In this book, the author — wife of an ex-military man — explores the psychology of a soldier returning from war, the PTSD, and the nauseating nostalgia the author identifies as Military Separation Anxiety. Readers will follow the author’s own journey after marrying her high school sweetheart, a journey that changed her from being a mere wife to becoming a compassionate, loving, and understanding wife, allowing her husband the space to reconnect with himself and with life after service.
Leaving War, Finding Love: A Veteran's Transition unveils the common problems that affect families of ex-military men. It identifies the root causes of some of the conflicts in relationships and offers a path to fostering stronger relationships and traversing the difficult period of transition with confidence and serenity. I loved the fact that this book is written by a woman and it gives a fresh, objective perspective into the inner struggles of our heroes and husbands returning from military service. The book is beautifully written and the popular, conversational style of the author makes it accessible to a very wide audience. Hillary Sigrist writes with the confidence of someone who can only speak from inside experience and her voice comes across as authoritative and cogent, utterly compelling. Leaving War, Finding Love: A Veteran's Transition is a book that everyone considering a relationship or in a relationship with an ex-military man or woman should read. It is laced with great insight, timely advice, and wisdom that can save many relationships.
