Leaving Everest by Megan Westfield takes readers to one of the most famous mountains on the planet (Mount Everest, if the title doesn't already give it away!). The story of Emily's seventh summit climb is more than just a mountain story, though. The 20-year-old young woman arrives at a crossroads in her life. Her true passion is climbing, but her family wants her to study and start a "proper" career. When Emily finds out the real reason behind her father's wish to send her back to the USA, she needs to make some difficult decisions. These aren't made any easier, considering she's in the middle of taking on the challenge to make it to Everest's summit once again. Her seventh climb would break some records and would open doors for a much needed sponsorship towards her big dream of climbing the five highest mountains of the world. In addition, her friend since childhood, Luke, is also on the mountain and more than friendship seems to be in the hearts of the two young adults.
Emily, the protagonist of Leaving Everest by Megan Westfield, is a strong young woman, and she has to deal with quite a few issues in addition to climbing the highest mountain of the world under less than ideal circumstances (it's not what you might expect - but I can't give too much away). I enjoyed the journey and, as I have no clue at all about how climbing Everest works, I also learned quite a lot about this. It's not in-depth knowledge, but enough to get an idea about what is involved. You don't have to be an expert to understand the novel and enjoy it. The main issue is the relationship between Emily and Luke, and Emily and her family anyway. I would recommend Leaving Everest to everyone who'd like to sit back with a cup of tea or coffee, relax, and follow an exciting journey up to the summit of Everest; a journey laced with lots of romance and growing up.
