Last of the Ghost Lions by Mike MacDee is an action-packed novel filled with adventure and crime. Juno Radcliffe's neighborhood has just suffered a devastating robotic attack. As the last survivor of the Ghost Lion commando unit, she is the best hunter, and there is no greater pleasure than to hunt down the creator of the drone and bring him to justice. This should be an easy job for her, except that there is more evil in the world than she thought and more enemies to face. Follow her into strange lands where men are slaves and into places where female warriors are forbidden. But will anyone stand between her and her mission?
The narrative starts in the midst of the action; a blast, a terrorist attack. The images that greet readers as they open the first page are depressing, but Juno curled up into a ball in the corner of the lobby of the bank, her body in agony, catches the reader's attention. “The bullet-riddled curtains blocked everyone’s view of the carnage in the streets outside.” From the beginning, the author gives readers evidence that the bad guy is ruthless, given the devastation that accompanies the action. Hence the magnitude of the conflict is defined and, with a ruthless antagonist, there is the need for a skilled and powerful protagonist and that is Juno. I enjoyed that the protagonist is a female character and that she has to face impossible challenges. She wins the sympathy of readers because she is real and genuinely flawed. The writing is impeccably good and the author puts in enough emotions and action to make Last of the Ghost Lions a real page-turner.
