Lady Justice and the Lottery by Robert Thornhill is another exciting episode in Thornhill’s Lady Justice series. Once again, Maggie, Willy, Mary, and the Professor join forces with Walt to help two elderly gentlemen, Morty and Earl, who just won the largest lottery jackpot of all time. Overcome with grandiose plans to turn back the clock to “the good old days” with their new-found riches, the duo encounters trouble at every turn. After receiving a phone call from a distant and unknown relative, with a “ground floor” opportunity for investment, the two gentlemen begin to believe their attorney’s warnings. Then, while Morty is announcing his plans to build a new baseball park, Earl is kidnapped, along with Maggie. Due to Maggie’s quick thinking, Walt and Ox are able to rescue them. But then Earl gets caught up in another scam, requiring even more – and more dangerous – help from Walt.

Lady Justice and the Lottery is a fun read, once again showcasing the talents of Robert Thornhill. The many little factoids Thornhill inserts throughout this book provide surprising edutainment. I learned something about Elvis Presley that I will carry with me to my dying day. I generally am amazed at the historical knowledge of Thornhill, evident in those same factoids. Thornhill obviously does his homework before writing his stories. He has the uncanny ability to weave those factoids into the fictional plot of his mysteries, while maintaining an air of humor throughout his stories. In short, Thornhill is something of a genius at crafting a good, entertaining mystery, guaranteed to make you laugh. I’ve read quite a few of his books, and there hasn’t been a lemon in any of them. Lady Justice and the Lottery is a story everybody can enjoy, and one I strongly recommend to all readers.
