"Like most children born in Peru I learned to knit, weave and make clay figurines to tell stories. I was very young when I discovered I could draw a sweater or paint a tapestry of colors easier than I could weave in a loom. I carried my pencils everywhere... drew mountains, trees and moons, portraits of family and friends. I enjoyed telling stories with my "paper tapestries". When I was 5 years old I crayoned a three feet blue whale on the pink wall of my grandparent's home. Aunts and cousins answered my call see my whale, their eyes became very round as they stare at the whale for a long time. Soon they agreed that the drawing of the blue whale looked good on the pink wall, but aunt Carmen announced "We can not have more whales on walls, let's get a ream of paper."

Young Kusikiy is worrying about the lack of rain in his small community because the birds are not singing and the trees seem sad. Kusikiy loves this community where he lives so he strives to find a way to help. As this young child talks about the difficult situations he is worrying about, readers will enjoy learning interesting things about Peru and their traditions and culture. As we journey through this book, Kusikiy talks about his mother being a weaver and his great-grandfather being the Keeper of Wisdom and Peace on the island of Peru.
Kusikiy a Child from Taquile captivates the minds and hearts of its readers through this beautiful story that reaches deep below the earth and travels high above to the stars. The story gives great details about life in Peru in the small community of Taquile. It was fun learning about the spirit of the community, their ways of weaving, the clothes they wear and why they wear different things, about the Andes Mountain, and about the Llama Constellation.
This book is beautifully written, easy to read so that children and adults can understand. But what makes the book so appealing are the detailed and vibrant illustrations, created by the author, Mercedes Cecilia. There is a page of illustrations for each page of the story that enhances the story to better understand what the author is saying. This book is just beautiful inside and out. What a wonderful book to have to teach your children about this place called Peru.
I highly recommend this book for your child’s library, and your public and local libraries. You will not be disappointed with this beautifully illustrated book that teaches us so much about life in Peru.
