Eden East’s world is all about Balance. As a Fallon, finding her Balancer, her soulmate, is crucial. She is heir to the East state, and one day all the Keepers and other Fallons of the East will be her responsibility. If she is not Bound, and through the Binding made Balanced, then she may fail in her duties to remove Imbalance, and in so doing put not just the East, but all the states of Trutinor at risk. There’s just one problem: everything Eden has ever been taught has been carefully stretched through a web of lies that goes far deeper than she could ever imagine. Keepers: The Eden East Novels Book 1 by Sacha Black has all the intrigue, romantic tension, deceit and darkness you could hope to find in a novel showcasing a perfectly Balanced society where nothing is quite as it seems.
Sacha Black is a master when it comes to spinning webs. Every time I thought I had a grasp on what was coming next, Keepers would switchback and I would once more be lost and utterly captivated in Black’s sway. Her skill with toting key components of Keepers’ world as idyllic, only to have them unfurl in all their disturbing glory, is definitely something that will keep me coming back for future installments. Plot aside, Black’s characters were well articulated and rounded. I very much appreciated the little insights Black wove throughout; she really did an amazing job at making everyone feel real. Even the First and the Last Fallons. I did get confused once or twice on who a person was supposed to be, but that was a simple fix once I skimmed my notes a bit; it was just so easy to get caught up in Eden’s struggles that I mentally filed someone away as less important until they showed up again and proved me wrong.
