Katz' Cat by Dawn Greenfield Ireland is the first book in a new cozy mystery series. Jimmy Katz is done with the Big City and is ready for a change. After being robbed at gunpoint at a gas station, Jimmy is ready for something small-time, and this lands him a job in Twinkle, Texas. He settles into the small town at a boarding house with his only companion, his parrot Guppy, and soon an abandoned kitten named Maddy. Then everything changes when Jimmy inherits from a long-lost relative and discovers there may be more behind his parents' accident than he originally thought. He's threatened by a mysterious force as he searches for the truth and uncovers surprising secrets. He thinks he's trading city life in for a quieter existence but soon learns that even a small town has danger.
The strongest theme within the story is moving on and finding a purpose as Jimmy finds a new place for himself in Twinkle. His Big City problems follow him to Twinkle, and ties into a bigger mystery with him in the middle. Dawn Greenfield Ireland weaves together multiple threads that include his parents' car crash and his armed robbery. As the story evolves, the deeper the mystery becomes with danger around every turn, such as attempted murder, a break-in, and vandalism. Each thread connects directly to Jimmy and creates a larger story that Ireland unfolds slowly throughout. His two animal companions in the story, Guppy the parrot and Maddy the cat, have a purpose and individual personalities that help Jimmy with the mystery. Each has a strong presence in the story, with both able to communicate in their own way. The two of them have a subplot within the mystery as they become friends and form a strong bond. Katz' Cat is a charming mystery with delightful animal companions, a complex plot, and a small-town setting.
