How wonderful to find a new way to help your small child to stop using the all-too-familiar word – no! Delin Colón’s innovative children’s book, entitled Katy Rose Likes to Say NO!, is a must-have for all parents. Ms. Colón’s explanation to parents at the beginning of the book is a reminder that the toddler is merely establishing her independence and influence. The need for a strong toddler, like Katy Rose, to express some power in a world where adults have authority is a necessary reminder. The story also introduces the concept of words having consequences by describing what happens when Katy Rose says “No.” The story is written in a rhyming, poetic format and will be easily understood and remembered by toddlers who are going through this phase.
Toddlers will also love the charming illustrations in the book. Ms. Colón’s artwork hits the mark for reaching this stage of developing toddlers. She introduces a relatively unknown art form called cut-paper art. After the story is told, she explains how to do this captivating artwork, creating an activity for parents and children to do together. And so, another way to improve the parent/toddler relationship is taught. Cut-paper art activities can be continued in the home throughout the childhood years. It is reasonable to suggest that parents could continue to teach children lessons by developing other stories using this format. It is no secret there are many children’s books from which to choose; however, this one is truly unique and invaluable – a great resource for parents!
