"Katie’s Hellion" by Lizzy Ford is an entertaining and well-thought-out paranormal romance novel. A hellion is a mischievous, troublesome or unruly person. In this caseit is Rhyn, who was one of the shapeshifting immortals making up The Council That Was Seven before he was sent down to hell for nearly wiping out humankind. Katie is destined to be an immortal’s mate, and guess which immortal’s? Yes, bad boy Rhyn's. Not so good when she can’t stand Rhyn who is immensely unlikeable, at least at the start of the story. Katie finds out her fate only when suddenly she is accused of abandoning the five-year-old son she never had but which everyone, including her own sister, seems to know all about. It is not surprising that she hits the whiskey with a vengeance and gets a little bad tempered.
This is quite a complicated novel and you have to concentrate to pick up some of the nuances and background information you need to make sense of it. It is very violent, particularly against Katie, and possibly, at times, to an unjustified degree. You end up just wanting somebody – anybody – to be nice to her for once. There are plenty of interesting characters to be found, from Gabriel the Death Bringer to baby angel Toby, and there is no shortage of demons and vampires. The main players, Katie and Rhyn, develop as the story progresses and you can’t help being fascinated by them. The plot is original and unpredictable and unrolls tantalizingly slowly. Altogether, an exciting, absorbing read.
