Kat Girl by Sarah Lahey is a contemporary romance novel set in Australia, following the story of Kathleen McDermott and Liam Wolf. After facing a coup in her previous role as CEO of Volt Construction, Kat embarks on a fresh start as a Heritage Consultant. Her initial meeting with Liam at a bar on the day of the coup sets the ball rolling, bringing them together. On her first job as a Heritage Consultant, Kat is surprised to find that Liam is the property developer she will be working with. Sparks fly as their professional boundaries blur, giving way to attraction. As their connection grows stronger, Liam begins to dream of settling down with Kat. However, Kat, still burdened by emotional scars from her past two failed marriages and the loss of her daughter Charlotte, is not ready to take the plunge. Will two people at different stages in their lives be able to find a balance that could bring them together?
Sarah Lahey has crafted a romance novel with a unique twist in Kat Girl. Unlike typical romance novels where the girl dreams of a happily ever after while the man runs away from commitment, Kat Girl reverses these roles, with Liam eager to tie the knot and Kat needing time and space to heal from her past. The plot is multilayered, combining architectural challenges with the emotional turmoil of a blossoming relationship and the depth of personal loss and recovery. The characters, both human and four-legged, are well-crafted. I particularly liked how Liam believes his cat is communicating with him in their "conversations," and how Blossom, the neighbor’s dog, follows Kat around and becomes her protector. Sarah Lahey explores the theme of child loss with sensitivity. Kat Girl is not just a romance novel but also a story of Kat’s journey of healing and personal growth.
