In Kaleidoscope by Janine Pestel, one late October evening in Minnesota, a teenager mysteriously disappears while babysitting. The boy in her care is convinced she was taken by a strange tornado after he'd made a wish. Although the boy is not taken seriously, the babysitter later appears before demon hunter and former coroner Robert, who promises to rescue her and the others kidnapped. Together with his partner, Johann, who left the priesthood when his sister was kidnapped by a demonic entity, they begin their investigations. They uncover a series of disappearances that may have links to a toy factory. As Robert and Johann become embroiled in the search for the truth, they realize that they may be involved in a war with a demon known as the Prince of Hell, who kidnapped Theresa, Johann's sister. Robert and Johann are determined to rescue Theresa and the adults and children held hostage. As Robert and Johann prepare to face their enemies, a secret deal made with a demon and a discovery regarding family secrets could end their chances of success and freedom for those captured.
Kaleidoscope by Janine Pestel is such a great story with many interesting layers to the plot. I found every character had been meticulously created, even the minor ones. I loved the relationship between Johann and Robert, their personalities complemented each other perfectly. They each carried their own personal burdens from the past but supported one another brilliantly as they fought against evil. The dialogue between them was superb and, at times, really witty which was a clever addition to break the intense and realistic scenes of violence and tension. There were also powerful lessons regarding values and morals and how mankind can sometimes go against their moral beliefs to achieve a goal. This was especially evident with Robert when he makes a shocking discovery about his family. The final battle scenes were gripping and I really could not see how they could win against such powerful forces. Johann's act of selflessness towards the end of the story was heartwarming and quite emotional. I am sure the next story in the series, Cerberus, is going to be just as explosive as Kaleidoscope.
