Jum & Muz: I Forget – A Care Giver's View Of Alzheimer's by Mary Ellen Connelly is the story of Jim, whose life was cut short by the cruel disease of Alzheimer's. The book chronicles their story, their trials, tribulations, and turmoil. The gradual changes in Jim’s personality, the progression of the disease, the patient’s bewilderment, the sense of isolation and loneliness are discussed in the book. The author also speaks about the burden of the care giver that the author carried alone. She also speaks about the background of Jim and their family so that it is easy to understand the circumstances of dealing with the effects of Alzheimer's. The book delves into that aspect of life, which many times we cannot understand, and how to handle the questions that confuse and baffle us at times.
Jim comes across as a loving and compassionate person, and the author extends her gratitude and thanks to all those who helped her while handling Jim and his Alzheimer's. Her observations, notes, and interpretations encapsulate those trying times while coming to terms with Jim’s illness and handling the disease. The author’s strength, determination, and fortitude come to the fore while reading Jim's story, and the pain and grief she experienced are palpable. The few pictures shared in the book help readers connect with Jum and Muz. The ten early warning signs of Alzheimer’s shared in the book are helpful and informative to readers. The book is informative, yet at the same time strikes a chord in the hearts of readers. It is scary to learn how this fatal brain disease kills the brain and that the loss of mental and physical functions ultimately leads to death.
