Journey to Rainbow Valley by Kristi Shimada is a beautiful spiritual picture book for young children. A young girl named Mariko and her father are in the garden planting a tree where Mariko's late mother used to sit often. Mariko is sad at the thought of how much she misses her mother, but her father reminds her about the magic mirror, allowing Mariko's mood to lift a little. The magic mirror possesses the ability to transport someone into the magical land of Rainbow Valley, where you can meet up with loved ones who have passed away. Whilst at Rainbow Valley, Mariko wonders what her spirit animal is, if she had one at all. What spirit animal do you think Mariko is? And what do you think yours would be?

Journey to Rainbow Valley is an enjoyable book. From start to finish, the book radiates spirituality, leaving the reader feeling calm and peaceful. Kristi Shimada's book not only entertains the young reader, but I feel it will also provide comfort to those who have lost someone close to them, and maybe even inspire them in creating a magical world where they can talk to them still. Every detail has been carefully constructed by Kristi who has created a wonderful book that children are going to love. The illustrations by the talented Eko Setiawan are colorful and incredibly professional. I hope to see more from both Kristi and Eko, as they work well together.
