LA Times reporter Julie McNamara is at it again: getting into trouble and putting herself in danger. While covering the Occupy Los Angeles movement, Julie is hit on the head with a bottle. Minutes before the incident, Julie’s attention was focused on a beautiful articulate woman, standing on a milk crate and yelling through a bullhorn at the crowd. Julie senses a story in this and, like the true grit investigative reporter she is, Julie homes in on it. Trouble is, Julie's covering of Donna Martin’s radical political agenda gets Donna fired. But that is not all. Julie’s old acquaintance Johnny Walker, the star center fielder for the LA Dodgers, ends up going undercover for the FBI. Julie’s boyfriend lawyer Evan Wilson and Johnny attend a get-rich-quick investment promo that offers investment in a desalinization process. Johnny does not intend to put up his own hard-earned cash, so the FBI dips in with two million bucks. Johnny invests with the Iraqi suspect the FBI is watching. Is he a drug lord, a terrorist, or just an ordinary man living the American dream? When the money goes missing (all 20 million of investor cash) the FBI suspects Johnny. Can Julie help straighten matters out, as well as track down both the guy who attacked her and the political activist Donna Martin? Oops, lest we forget romantic matters, Julie’s love life may just crash and burn since she found out that Evan and Donna had quite a steamy past together.
Julie is such a character that reviewing her adventures and antics has become a pleasure for me. She is as feisty as ever, maybe even a little more, and there is nothing like having a permanent job at the LA Times to give a girl back her confidence. Although this episode is not half as dangerous as her previous encounters with bad guys, Julie’s personal life takes a strange big turn. Politics is an interesting angle in this book and if you ever wanted to know why Bush won and not Gore, dive in. However, it is not the main focus, and other issues and problems get the airing they deserve. Fresh and witty, with snappy dialogue and non-stop action, author Dan Murphy’s latest mystery does not disappoint. My only criticism is that I found this book a little lightweight compared to Julie’s ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ adventures. However, a great read for Julie McNamara fans!
