Joey and the Net is a very enjoyable and entertaining read. This story deals with a family of Tilapia fish that have an interesting history dating back to the New Testament where possibly Peter caught this particular type of fish. Swimming in Lake Mead is Mother Mam and her twenty-nine babies she carries in her mouth. The reason Mother Mam does this is to protect her little babies from things within the sea that would cause harm to them. One of those twenty-nine fish was named Joey. He was always the adventurous one that wanted to see what was in the ocean and didn't see the danger lurking. Mother Mam tried to protect her babies from a fishing boat but one day she was captured. Adventurous little Joey thought quickly and came up with a plan. Can Joey save his mother from the fishermen?
This book is illustrated very well, allowing the reader to envision what it must have been like for this family of fish. There are lots of colors and pictures that draw the reader into the story. This would be a great book for a school library, local library, and a reading club. Children as well as parents will enjoy this exciting read. This would also be a fun book to give as a birthday gift, especially for any child who enjoys the sea.
