It’s Free: So What Could Go Wrong? by Carol Hadley is a book written for young adults and tells the story of Andi who ‘wins’ a horse in a competition. She has always been mad about horses and this thoroughbred is exactly what she has always dreamed of; a grey with black points. However, when she goes to collect him, she finds that Bobolink of Cauvener has already been removed, legally, and there is nothing she can do. She is befriended by a dashing young man and it takes her some time to realize he is not who he appears to be. She meets up with an old friend of her brother's and together they rescue a horse and attempt to rehabilitate it. I don’t want to give too much away, but the plot is quite complex, and while the new horse, Gus, gets better, Andi has put herself in danger.
The heroine is a rather naïve young twenty-something and her best friend is a young widow whose character is the exact opposite of Andi; for example, she does not have the same love for horses. There are several twists and turns in the story with a very realistic conclusion. It will appeal to readers between 16 and 25 years old, the characters are well drawn and the pace does not flag. Her friend Tatha has some delightful lines. It’s an easy read but a little intricate towards the end as Andi, her brother, Paul, and Wil struggle to keep a secret. Young people who like horses will enjoy It’s Free: So What Could Go Wrong? by Carol Hadley.
